What Is Email Deliverability?

Email deliverability is the measure of whether your message actually reaches the recipient's inbox rather than being bounced, deferred or filtered into spam. It is a chain of events: your server submits the message, the recipient server accepts it, authentication and policy checks run, and finally the message is either delivered, rejected or filtered.

Sending an email is not the same as getting delivered, and getting delivered is not the same as reaching the inbox. Full deliverability is an outcome determined by reputation, authentication, content and recipient engagement — not by any single setting.

How Email Deliverability Works

  1. The sender submits the message to its SMTP server.
  2. The SMTP server processes it and routes it to the recipient's mail server.
  3. The recipient server receives it and runs authentication and policy checks.
  4. Authentication checks run — SPF, DKIM and DMARC verify the sender.
  5. The message is delivered, deferred, rejected or filtered based on reputation and content.

SPF, DKIM & DMARC

SPF
Sender Policy Framework. A DNS record listing which servers are allowed to send email for your domain. Receivers check it to confirm the sender is authorized.
DKIM
DomainKeys Identified Mail. A cryptographic signature on each message that proves it was not altered in transit and is genuinely from your domain.
DMARC
Domain-based Message Authentication. Tells receivers what to do when SPF or DKIM fail, and lets you collect reports on who is sending using your domain.

This tool does not perform live DNS lookups. To check your actual SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, use the dedicated authentication checker.

Why Emails Bounce

  • Invalid addresses — the mailbox or domain does not exist.
  • Full mailboxes — the recipient cannot accept more mail.
  • Temporary server failures — busy or overloaded servers.
  • Policy rejection — spam or security filtering.
  • Authentication problems — failed SPF, DKIM or DMARC.
  • Reputation issues — the sender or IP is blocked or has poor reputation.

Frequently asked questions

Does This Tool Guarantee Inbox Placement?

No. Inbox placement depends on many factors including recipient-provider filtering, sender reputation, authentication, engagement, complaints, infrastructure and message content. This checker identifies likely risk areas based on deterministic, client-side analysis. For the definitive answer, send a real test email to inboxes across providers.
